A building at the heart of the community
Since it was built in 1929 our building has been a place for people across our local community to gather, first as a church and now as a community centre. It supports an area that offers one of the few patches of affordable housing in Richmond and which therefore houses a disproportionate number of lone parents and people suffering from long term illness or unemployment. It’s also an area isolated from support services and transport links. There’s a real local need for a meeting space, a food bank, a place for classes and activities and a service that can provide help and advice. Luckily the building has room for all of this and more.

An incredibly versatile space
The centre is often compared to a tardis as there is plenty of space for all sorts of different activities. We even have an outdoor area which is used as a community allotment. We don’t hire out the Centre for parties but if you want to run a class or activity and we have an available slot in our diary we can offer hire for regular events.
The main hall
The hall is where we hold the majority of activities, including our children’s clubs, sports activities and yoga and pilates classes. It is also used for drama workshops and performances. It can hold approximately 120 adults. It is available for hire for regular, group based events.
The Common Room
Upstairs above our cafe area is the Common Room, it’s a great space for small meetings, 1:1 meetings, after school homework and maths clubs and for initiatives like our Welcome Project for people whose first language isn’t English.
The IT Suite
This area is a resource for anyone locally who doesn’t have access to computers or the internet. We can also provide basic IT support on an Ad hoc basis as and when requested.
The suite features five computers, one of which features Microsoft Office .We have a colour printer linked to the computers and prints can be made at the cost of 20p per A4 copy.
As with the whole building, the IT Suite offers free WiFi.
Outdoor space
We are lucky to benefit from lots of green space around the building, featuring areas to play, sit and meet. We also lease a plot at the front of Stillingfleet Allotments, directly next to us, where volunteers and centre users sew, grow and care for a range of fruit and vegetables throughout the year.
Available for hire to external providers
If you want to run a regular class – anything from children’s dance to Tai Chi – at the Castelnau Community Centre we can offer hall hire. Here’s what the space offers:
- 6 tables and 60 chairs are available
- 15.2m x 9.2m – 140m2
- Capacity 150 adults
- Heated
- Free WiFi
- Use of the disabled toilet, toilets and baby changing facilities
